Describe campus/program, goals, and theory of change

Last year we added Angleton Junior High to our STEM Academy. Our goal was to improve student’s understanding of career fields and jobs. They have accomplished this by holding career focus lessons through advisory classes and hosting special career days once a semester. Their 8th grade students had a special career day to prepare them for choices in high school. This allowed the 8th graders to see the available CTE options and courses in action, as well as the industry professionals who are the outcome of those pathway choices.

Angleton High School has expanded the learning experiences for health science students by attending field experiences at UTMB Galveston, provided opportunity for the students to become certified EKG technicians upon passing the national exam in February, and by adding a computer science principles course offering to students.

Our district has been involved in the development of a district strategic plan. The STEM Academy Advisory team has been working in sub groups to identify areas of expansion for next year. This is a work in progress which will be reported and discussed at the STEM Advisory meeting with our community members.

What areas of interest do you have for Technical Assistance (up to 3 areas, rank in order of importance)?

Help us build our middles school electives to create a pipeline for our pathways at high school.

Expand our Advisory Board to diversify and add more parties that can help us with internships for our students as they move to senior year,

examine the possibility of adding biotechnology pathway.

What tools or resources would be valuable to your campus to support your implementation of the blueprint?

Ideas and options from other middles school programs

Review of CTE courses and other courses we may move to middle school so we can make room for students to complete the coherent course sequence in high school. In the current configuration we don't have much space for electives in the early grades in high school.

Support and coordination with CTE.

References and ideas of businesses for internships

What have been your challenges and how have you addressed them?

Challenges have been staffing and space. We moved some classes like welding to the middle school building where we have labs available

Since there is no additional funding for staff building and expanding programs has been hard. We consistently look for resources to help us build programs.

Building the middle school program. We had a few electives like robotics and career exploration at the middle school. We are meeting with CTE to look at placing some principles classes in 8th grade and expanding options at 6th and 7th as well.
