Alice ECHS goals a centered on providing this target population with the support they need to become successful and productive citizens.  This means they are being supported academically, emotionally and socially in order for the students to accomplish THEIR goals.  They want the students to have choices.

What have been your challenges and how have you addressed them?

1.  Developing structures/systems for monitoring students;

  • Monitors students in groups which allows them to determine progress by grade levels and core subject areas. Eduphoria allows teachers and administrators to access all state-mandated test scores. This allows a teacher to see if a student has traditionally been weak in a particular subject area. The teacher can check End-Of-Course (EOC) exams, benchmark tests, TELPAS, and STAAR.

2.  Developing effective structures for STUDENT DATA that connects and supports success:

  • Eduphoria allows a teacher and/or an administrator to review a students prior grades. This may become important in evaluating which type of remediation will work best for a student. Some of the remediation is conducted at a very high level, if a student has been traditionally weak in this area, another alternative may work better.
  • In addition to this, parents have access to their child's attendance and grades online through the Tx Connect Parent Portal.
  • The Alice ECHS works closely with Coastal Bend College and Del Mar College to obtain feedback on student progress throughout the course of instruction. If a student is not performing at the required level, interventions are implemented by the ECHS
  • The ECHS Principal and Counselor meet with the student to identify the reason(s) for low performance and take the required actions. The Student signs a Grade Contract that outlines the suggested steps to take to improve student understanding and student grades. Students are asked to take the contract home, explain it to their parent/guardian,obtain their signature also, and then return to the ECHS Counselor.

Alice ECHS effectively monitors and implements dual enrollment, and Advance Placement courses. Strongly believes that the rigor in Pre-AP and AP supports DC. It is a challenge because some 9th and 10th graders are not prepared for the rigor in the course. They have placed systems to monitor students and provide tutorials etc needed to master the class.

The ECHS offers summer TSI prep classes for all other 9th and 10th grade students who are not TSI ready in one or more sections. In addition, TSI Bootcamps are provided to students, which last half a day, and are followed by the students taking one TSI subject test. The ECHS offers TSI prep classes through Coastal Bend College (CBC) during the regular school year for those students who need to pass one or more sections of the TSI assessment. CBC offers various course options including Non-Course Base Option (NCBO), a non-semester length course delivered in an intense workshop setting; Integrated Course, a course that integrates two areas such as Reading and Writing together so that a student gets two courses for the time and price of one course.

ECHS has a strong partnership with Coastal Bend College.  It is located just down the street from the high schools.  Student can walk to the CBC Center.  Students have ID and may attend any activities on the CBC campus.
