Describe campus/program, goals, and theory of change

The goals of Travis Early College High School are to:

Increase student achievement; Increase the number of students who graduate from high school college-ready; Increase Advanced Placement, associate degree, dual credit and concurrent enrollment participation, as well as enrollment in rigorous coursework in a college-preparatory curriculum and Increase the college success of students as demonstrated through persistence of students in college. We seek to educate students with diverse academic backgrounds, not just those who were at the top of their middle school classes. We believe that hard work and determination, combined with a strong support network provided by the school, leads to success for our students and a seamless transition from high school to higher education.

Describe Blueprint Benchmark strengths

BM4; strong ELAR; providing the foundation and support for TSI readiness; blended four-year plan aligned; AA; one full time counselor to provide the services; part time senior preparation for FASA, applications; etc.

BM5:  starts with Bridge diagnostic; interventions during fall and prep; IEP per student; retest every three weeks; with tutoring support and scheduled during the school day; by start of grade 11, 95-100% of the students have met TSI in all areas..

Transitioning from 2-year college to the university; dealing with students changing their major;

Some type of training for persistence for staying in college or perhaps pairing internships based career interest or for career building as a tool for sustaining the four-year plan completion;

What have been your challenges and how have you addressed them?

Getting teachers to move the students to TEA Distinctions standard in all EOCs and then maintain that level consistently for each cohort;

Provide additional support for PSAT and SAT and ACT;

Social and emotional supports are needed for managing that piece when the Counselor’s emphasis is on academic;

Professor communication to student and ECHS needs to improve, some are reluctant to serve HS students;

Expanding opportunities outside the regular school day for college classes;

In order to prepare our students for the rigors of college, each student in all grade levels must take the AVID college preparation course sequence for all four years. This provides them with valuable academic and college knowledge skills to help them succeed in college. Juniors and seniors also have academic mentoring periods where they can receive tutoring for college and/or high school courses. We have a full time ECHS counselor and a part time exclusive Senior College Counselor to ensure all facets of the four-year plan is covered.

The Travis ECHS professional learning plan is becoming more and more student/campus driven due to the autonomy of our new Chief Innovation Officer who supervises all small innovation campuses. We provide new teacher orientation with the entire CIF; common planning PLCs by department; and Lead Forward data dig (mostly for the EOC areas but all departments plan together). We also use the data to drive instruction for our AP classes for which students are taking above and beyond the Associate of Arts a AP Arts and high school plan. We offer AP Spanish; Statistics; Calculus; English 3 and 4 as a back-up plan; for students who my attend a non-public Texas college or university.

In AP/DC courses we have 80% of each cohort earning the AA and 15% of those graduates complete the Public Business and Leadership Certification Program. We are constantly developing new teachers to be effective AP teachers; repeating AP training as often as possible; and could improve the use of vertical alignment through the PLC that meets by department core areas.

Travis ECHS has a focused Grade 9 Bridge that occurs for 3-5 days in June annually. Sessions include team building; summer project for English I (or others) to be completed by school start; TSI Prep; and a baseline assessment score and diagnostic completed. The IHE provides an IHE tour of facilities; data sharing systems; and TECHS counseling sessions for four-year planning for each new student.

Travis ECHS students enroll at San Antonio College as any other college student, participate in clubs and activities, take courses with other SAC students and have access to all the same facilities and resources as other college students, including the library and clubs and organizations. They also graduate at the SAC Commencement Ceremony, if they meet the requirements for earning an associate degree. The students have a separate high school graduation ceremony for Travis ECHS.
