Describe campus/program, goals, and theory of change

DECHS is committed to empowering a diverse body of students to develop and apply their skills in order to pursue knowledge and become productive college students, workers, and citizens. We will accomplish this by designing curricula and support structures that ensure all students meet and exceed all performance standards to obtain a high school diploma and an associate degree of two years of transferrable college credit.

Describe Blueprint Benchmark strengths

BM1:  We recruited and enrolled students that are true to the benchmark criteria.

BM5:  We are getting much better with the TSI preparation because we became a testing site and can structure our own preparation.  We have tutors coming in to prepare for the content, structure of presentation, diagnostic, and retest. We use Sure Score and Princeton Review preparation plans.

What areas of interest do you have for Technical Assistance (up to 3 areas, rank in order of importance)?

We would be interested in use of classroom common structures, language, and strategies for creating a higher level of rigor and expectations for our students; master schedule integration between ISD and IHE; and a student ambassador program that emphasizes soft skills acquisition.

What tools or resources would be valuable to your campus to support your implementation of the blueprint?

Samples of master schedules that coordinate the traveling students between HS and IHE;

Different ways to register students for college in a controlled environment with technology;

More efficient coordination of requested courses, student listings for enrollment, and registration process;

What have been your challenges and how have you addressed them?

We are struggling with the:  SWS model that comes with the distractors of competitive clubs/athletics for students; transporting students to the college; scheduling conflicts with the comprehensive high school; and using an A/B schedule does not mesh with the college schedule.

We try to address them through communication and compromise.

We have two strands operating at this time: The Industry Cluster Advisory and Leadership Boards along with the traditional ECHS Leadership Team. The effectiveness is not known at this time as we are just implementing the Industry Clusters Grant. The ECHS Leadership Team has been operating effectively during the three years and now into the fourth year of ECHS operation.

School offers effective Student Support and Academic Counseling - describe
We have two counselors serving the students. They manage and aligned the Associate and High School four-year plans. Students are enrolled in the MAPS Class and a Reading support class this is embedded in the ECHS master schedule. We offer before, during and after school tutoring and our junior and senior students utilize the Math, Writing, and Tutoring College Centers. The counselors have a guidance curriculum plan based on an annual needs assessment that we conduct through input from parents and students. Using the data collected, the counselors provide resources to social services. Parent involvement opportunities are planned in collaboration with the ECHS administrative team, teachers and the IHE liaison. We have volunteer opportunities and students participate in academic, team building, and events such as the Male Leadership Symposium and Young Women’s Leadership Conference.

The ECHS students have full access to the comprehensive school offerings. As the workload grows for Juniors and Seniors, it becomes a critical choice and/or management of time to do it all. The challenge can be managed to a degree based on whether the college class is taken here at the DECHS campus or physically at the Cedar Valley College campus.
Describe IHE Partners and level of support including use of facilities

Support level from the college could be better.  Our visiting professors love to come to our campus. The current A/B block bell schedule provides constraints and we could use some more assistance with college advising.  Our IHE partnership is getting better as we have more frequent gathering of the ECHS Leadership Team and try to emphasize the need more student-centered support.
