The Mission of David W Carter High School, leaders and learners of like vision, is to construct, for each student, a solid foundation for measurable success in higher learning and preparedness for career opportunities.  As an ECHS we want to create a student who is able to manage time, behaviors, and self-advocate.

Carter ECHS has stayed true to the target population criteria and has worked really hard at aligning each student’s academic plan and schedule while provided that social-emotional support as the demands of the work increases.

Carter P-Tech at Cedar Valley Public Law and Early College High School at Cedar Valley College offers three pathways for students that will lead to the endorsements below. The endorsements include:

What have been your challenges and how have you addressed them?

Starting the recruiting and vetting timeline earlier would have been very helpful; communication has been our biggest solution in overcoming barriers and obstacles thus far; Cedar Valley College has been very supportive and helpful.

Carter P-Tech recently began to receive external assistance from an instructional coach to initiate the use of the Common Instructional Framework and the staff has fully embraced the concept. Each core department has chosen one strategy as their focus. The campus also uses Project Base Learning and will initiate instructional rounds at a later time.

Carter P-Tech ECHS has the ECHS Steering Committee as required by Benchmark 3 and is managed by Assistant Superintendent Rodgers and Executive Director Cheryl Nevels along the DCCCD and Cedar Valley College officials. Carter P-Tech ECHS also has an Industry Partners Advisory Board that includes representatives from Wells Fargo Bank, Bridgeworks (IT-Graphics), Dallas PD, Dallas FD, Dallas ISD, and other business entities. There are also parents, community partners, and Carter Alumni sitting on the Advisory Board. All persons are very supportive and have contributed to the growth and depth of the P-Tech initiative. There is a full-time Work-Place Coordinator that assists in all facets of connecting the ECHS to the partners.

Students are progress monitored every two weeks to determine targeted support. An academic support plan is established that includes tutoring before and after school, and during Saturday School. During Saturday School, students will be supported through APEX Learning and a rotation through English Language Arts. Methods of Academic & Personal Success (MAPS) and Advisory Period are additional supports that focus on soft skills for college and serves as a study hall to deliver tutorial sessions.
The counselor meets with students every three weeks to discuss grades and any academic issues. During this time, they confer about requirements for their degree plan. The Industry Partners collaborate with our Workplace Coordinator and ECHS team during a Skill Mapping sessions to plan projects and mentor students on the educational and career goals that each student has developed.

Professional development is on-going for improving instruction and making connections with colleagues and students. An external instructional coach has been contracted to provide training on the Common Instructional Framework and the Instructional Rounds process. Common PLCs are used daily to review student data and discuss the instructional rounds conducted to improve instruction and strengthen delivery by the teachers. PD also includes sessions with ECHS staff from other district campuses. These sessions allow the teachers to work collaboratively with other teachers on best practices and teaching strategies. PD sessions also include the opportunity to observe other high school classrooms. These observations are used to allow staff to observe their students with colleagues and gain another insight on classroom instruction with their own students in another content area.

All dual credit courses are taught by Cedar Valley College instructor at the Carter ECHS campus. As a Year 1 ECHS campus, all students are enrolled in Pre-AP classes and there are no AP classes. There is no IB program as this campus.

As a Year 1 program, Carter P-Tech ECHS, usage of the college facilities is somewhat limited (by choice) at this time.  College courses are taught on the ECHS Carter HS campus.  The Principal and AP in charge of the ECHS are very positive and pleased with the support received thus far from Cedar Valley College.

As a Year 1 program, Carter P-Tech ECHS is just beginning to understand the framework of an Associate of Applied Science degree as it aligns to the HS diploma.  The four-year pathways are laid out for all potential degree and/or certification attainments.
